Hello, my name is Callie Dollar, and my journey to becoming a Respiratory Therapist was made possible thanks to the incredible support I received from the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). When I first decided to enroll in the respiratory therapy program, the cost of tuition, books, and other essential supplies seemed overwhelming, especially knowing I wouldn’t be able to work as much due to the program. However, WIOA turned what seemed like an impossible obstacle into an achievable goal.
I learned about WIOA through one of my fellow classmates. Intrigued by the possibility of financial assistance, I researched the program further and discovered that WIOA offers support for individuals pursuing higher education, particularly in fields like healthcare. From the moment I reached out to them, they were committed to my success. They thoroughly assessed my financial situation and educational goals, providing a plan that covered all my needs. This included tuition fees, textbooks, supplies, clinical uniforms, and transportation to and from clinicals and classes.
The financial relief allowed me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of how I would pay for my education. As I progressed through the respiratory therapy program, I not only achieved my academic goals but exceeded them. One of the most significant milestones was securing a job even before I graduated. This early job offer was a testament to the quality of education and preparation I received.
On May 8, 2024, I graduated from Middle Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy. It was a moment of great pride and joy, showing the peak of years of hard work and the incredible support of WIOA. They not only helped me achieve my educational goals but also paved the way for a promising career.
WIOA’s support continued even after graduation. Recognizing the importance of professional certification, WIOA also assisted me financially with taking my National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) exams. This crucial support ensured that I could obtain my license without delay, further validating my qualifications and enhancing my career opportunities.
I am extremely proud to say that I officially became a Registered Respiratory Therapist on June 4, 2024, and I am committed to making a positive impact on patients’ lives. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of WIOA. Their assistance transformed my life, and I am forever grateful for their belief in my potential. Thank you, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, for all your support!
